What To Do After the Fire
The time after a fire can be a mentally and physically draining
to you and everyone involved. When a fire happens, lives are
suddenly turned upside down. Some of the hardest part is
knowing where to begin and know to you need to contact.
The information provided has been gathered by the United
States Fire Administration (USFA) to assist you in your time
of need. Action on some of the information will need to be
taken immediately and other information will be on going.
The purpose of this information is to give some kind off
assistance to help begin the rebuilding process. This
information provided is for informational purposes only. You

1. Contact your local disaster relief service, such as the Red Cross, if
you need temporary housing, food, and or medication.

2. If you are insured, contact your insurance company for detailed
instructions on protecting the property, conducting inventory and
contacting fire restoration companies. If you are not insured, try
contacting private organizations for aid and assistance.

3. Check with the fire department to make sure your residence is safe
to enter. Be watchful of any structural damage caused by fire.

4. The fire department should see that the utilities are either safe to use
or are disconnected before they leave the site.
DO NOT attempt to
reconnect utilities yourself.

5. You may want to conduct a inventory of damaged property and
items.

6. Try to locate valuable documents and records.

7. If you are leaving the residence. Contact you local police department
and let them know you will not be at the residence.

8. Notify your mortgage company or your landlord.

9. Begin saving receipts for any money spend due to fire loss. These
may be needed later on.

10. Check with the IRS ( Internal Revenue Service about any special
benefits for anyone recovering from any fire.
